Year 2 – Peake Class

Welcome to Year 2!

Our Year 2 Class Teacher is Mrs Radcliffe, supported by Mrs Gore.

The children follow the National Curriculum, which you can find out more about by clicking the link below:

In Year 2, we strive to teach the children to be more independent learners, building on their work in Year 1 and aiming to be ready to move onto Key Stage 2 at the end of the year. In Reading, we use a combination of daily phonics, individual reading – both independent and adult led, guided whole class and group reading and aim to have the majority of children using Accelerated Reader by the end of the year. We listen daily to short stories and chapter books to instil a love of reading for all.

In writing we use the Talk 4 Writing approach in line with the rest of the school. We use text maps and a model text to internalise a text orally which then means we can use it to help us write. We discover new vocabulary, learn devices and practise spelling and grammar all within our writing lessons.

In Maths we follow the White Rose curriculum, using a variety of different resources. We always have concrete resources available and can independently choose and use these when we need to. Each lesson starts with some quick maths – to refresh our memories and help retain previous learning. We then attempt a problem solving task linked to the current learning. Our main lesson starts with fluency which is essential for the problem solving that follows.

The majority of our other lessons are taught using Cornerstones Curriculum. All lessons are taught discreetly to enable children to know exactly what they are learning and why. We endeavour to make lessons as fun, practical and interesting as possible whilst ensuring the children learn the skills and knowledge needed for the next stage in their learning.
